L'Oréal is a French company worldwide leader in cosmetics. Its brand name is synonymous with beauty, innovation and scientific excellence in more than 130 countries.
In India, they employ over 1,000 people across six sites including: four regional offices, a factory in Chakan, Pune and headquarters in Mumbai. Their continuous commitment to research and development ensures to continue to deliver innovative, safe, high quality products to Indians. The L'Oréal's success starts with their people who are the most precious asset for the company. They embrace responsibility to their employees, their consumers, their environment and the communities in which they operate.
L'Oréal supports underprivileged young women thanks to a certified training center in beauty care. The target is mostly girls dropouts of school from slum areas.
The training covers Hair Cuts, Color, Care, Styling, Skin Care Facials, Threading, Waxing, Manicures and Pedicures.
The aim of this training is to give them their first job but also provide them an economic security thanks to the knowledge they acquire with these formations. « Beautiful Beginnings » is conducted in partnership with the NGO Action Aid.As a result these girls either become employable in existing beauty salons or become able to set up their own small beauty salons. They become economically secure and get more freedom to balance their family duties. In addition to that, as a proof to the sustainability of this project, the Beauty industry has been identified by Aide et Action as a high growth sector requiring new employment.
What we appreciated in this project in terms of corporate social responsibility is that it is a long-term project that brings real skills and revenues to this target.
L'Oréal India has created a comprehensive education and employment project starting with the curriculum for the 4-months course at Beautiful Beginnings and providing the equipment. They have extensively trained the trainers for the course and also co-certify the course and help the girls in getting employment afterwards. The training centers have been created in Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Nasik (newly opened) and 429 girls have been trained to date.
L'Oreal India's manufacture is based in Chakan on the outskirts of Pune, Maharashtra amidst thriving industrial and agricultural communities.
Upon interaction over a period of time with these surrounding villages, they came to realize that although they had big cities like Mumbai and Pune in their vicinity the awareness levels about social issues in these villages was quite low. With this in mind, L'Oreal India Pune's Factory initiated « Project Care » in the year 2008. « Project Care » has been developed to increase the awareness levels of the society on four basic fronts that are Health / Safety, Environment, Education, Childcare and Women's empowerment. L'Oréal India have diligently targeted to complete one task every quarter and cover all the above-mentioned fields by either involving top notch experts of the respective fields or by using in house talent.
